Watson's Bay is a beautiful spot morning or afternoon. It's a fair way around to get there as it actually looks west, back at the Harbour bridge across Sydney Harbour from the eastern side. But it's worth the trip. There are two sides of the bay really - the southern end with a charming old swimming enclosure and the northern end with the famous Watson's Bay Hotel and Doyles seafood restaurant. Start off at the ocean baths - there's plenty of room to lap it out in the pool or just lay about on the boardwalk and watch the boats come and go.
These baths are never full - you'd be lucky to share your dip with more than a handful of locals picking mussels from the pylons. Walk north past the grand old building on the hillside across to the ferry wharf and protected little beach. Behind is the restaurant and pub - both good - especially in the afternoon when the sun is setting in the west. In Summer especially, the well heeled Friday and Saturday night crowds get pretty big here. The parking can be tight, but there are a few back street to trawl through. Else you can catch the ferry from the city which drops you right at the Bay - not a bad way to travel either.
Watson's bay used to host many a fishing competition for Sydney Harbour and outside the heads in the open seas. Look for the photos on the walls in the hotel. Big catches of sport fish and shark have been weighed at the end of the wharf - not sure if they still do this today but over the years they've hoisted some BIG fish down there. Walk up behind Watson's Bay to look east off the cliffs at The Gap, out to the Pacific and New Zealand. If you're only in Sydney for a few days, make the effort to get to Watson's Bay - it's worth it.
