A place that doesn't need an introduction. The very famous and very special Waimea Bay on Oahu's North Shore in Hawaii. Having had the pleasure of being there a number of times, I can tell you there are many faces of Waimea. It can be flat as a tack at Waimea - a true bay, not even a ripple. The only waves are the ones you make yourself when you jump off the big rock at the end. Not many people, nice and quiet and chilled. Come back in winter when the big swells are pounding in and it's another story. The place is jammed packed - locals, surfers, photographers, and heaps of lookers!
The wave that breaks out the back is truly huge but there is no shortage of brave surfers taking the quick drop and left hander. The wave re-gathers on the way to the sand to form one heavy and mean shore break that slams onto the steep sloping sand. You don't want to be under that wall of water with only sand beneath you! Just negotiating the shore break is enough to earn any surfer a gold star in my book. The atmosphere is akin to a special party that you are very lucky to have been invited to. The cars are lined up on the hills side, everyone rubbernecking to get a view of the surf masters.
It would be a true life achievement to say you have surfed Waimea. I wish... but what a great place. If you are holidaying in Honolulu, hire a care one day and drive on up to the North Shore. The whole area is pretty special.
