Catherine Hill Bay is an old coastal mining town just north of Swansea (or south of Merewether if you prefer), about 90 minutes north of Sydney. It's a one road in, one road out kind of place. Locals are very local and like it that way. It is a charming little spot with a big ocean beach front. There is an old wharf that juts into the ocean - it's scale gives an indication of the size of ships that used to dock in here in days gone by.
A family member of mine once told me he used to date the daughter of the mine manger there, many years ago. I'm guessing she wasn't short of a dance! She lived on the big old house on the hill. In those days, that was the only substantial house - the rest where little mining huts in a row looking out to sea.
The huts are still there but no longer basic and cheap... they are worth a fortune now from all accounts. Big city developers have been sniffing around this unique little spot for 10 years now, wanting to make it the next 'great sea-change suburb' by building 600 odd houses (there are only about 100 there at present - mostly the old mining shacks). But the quiet majority has been very vocal and are doing a great job in keeping any development reasonable and appropriate. The battle continues. Our vote is for keeping it as it is.
