These two beaches are well known and make a nice weekly splash for many, with a beautiful ocean walk between them. Once a year however a few hundred healthy types choose the ocean route to get from one to the other. The annual Bondi to Bronte ocean swim attracts speedsters and splashers alike all keen to take on the pacific in this famous the 2km ocean crawl. Looking from Google Earth is doesn't look far, but 2km in open ocean water is not easy going. 2km works out to 40 laps of an Olympic sized swimming pool and is much harder in the chop and swell of the ocean. One could also get a bit anxious about the deep sea locals sharking around underneath, but what are the chances!! The guy in front looks heaps tastier!
Ocean swims are becoming quite a big deal in Sydney. Most beach surf clubs have their own, either around the heads to the next beach or some even further. A whole group of avid ocean swimmers turn up to each and every one to pit themselves against the ocean and the clock. You can head down to nearly any Sydney beach on the morning to find swimming capped headed bopping up and down way out the back behind the waves methodically working their way from one end of the beach to the other. These people deserve to live to 200!
